Articles, Books and Ideas

A book you might find very fascinating and interesting is THE MATH GENE by Keith Devlin.  Keith is a Senior Researcher at the Center for the Study of Language and Information at Stanford University.  The following is a quote about the book.”…, he offers a breathtakingly new theory of language development that describes how language evolved in two stages and how its main purpose was not communication.  He goes on to show that the ability to think mathematically arose out of the same symbolicmanipulating ability that was so crucial to the very first emergence of true language.”

I first read this book a few years ago and it helped me to understand some of the difficulties students have with learning mathematics and suggested ways to adjust my teaching so as to address these difficulties.  I am currently reading it again.
