Internship Opportunities with Exotic Cats

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is a no-kill facility committed to rescuing abused, abandoned and unwanted exotic cats. The refuge has the following internships available:

Animal Keeper Position
Responsible for the daily care of tigers, lions, cougars, black bears, black leopard, African serval, caracal, bobcats, rhesus macaque, and hoof stock.  Duties include animal husbandry, enrichment, record-keeping of animal behavior, educational public tours, and customer service.  Daily care includes cleaning, feeding, medicating the animals; assisting with maintenance and habitat construction.  A Bachelor’s degree in an animal-related discipline is preferred.
12 positions are open.

Horticulture Intern Position
Assist with the maintenance and improvement of the landscaped areas of the refuge, including the planting, pruning, and watering of trees, shrubs, and perennials; mowing; weed and plant litter removal.  Responsible for the identification and removal of toxic plants as well as the development of browse for environmental enrichment.  This internship requires the completion of an Independent Project.  Requires the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Botany, or a related field.

Compensation
$50 weekly cash stipend for food.  Housing is provided on the refuge.

The city of Hutchinson is seeking applicants for the following positions:

Firefighter

The next Firefighter entrance exam will be April 2, 2010. Applicants must be at least 18 and have a high school diploma or G.E.D., a valid Kansas driver’s license and EMT certification.

Police Officer

Summer Coordinator

g2g Outside (got to go Outside) Summer Coordinator

g2g Outside Program:
Sedgwick County Extension, the City of Wichita, and Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks have collaborated to create g2g Outside, an outdoor play initiative to promote increased physical activity, family time, and connection to nature.  The program seeks to rejuvenate the urgency that kids feel when they “got to go” outside for active exploration and fun!  g2g Outside stays connected to participants through blogs, twitter and facebook, and hosts play in the park nights, field trips (Zoo, Botanica, etc), and contests.

General Responsibilities:
The role of the Outside Summer Coordinator is to provide daily management of the g2g Outside program.  This position will ensure that the program provides opportunities for families to learn and practice new techniques that promote outdoor play and encourage children and their families to play outdoors to improve intellectual, social, physical, and emotional health.  Funding is provided through a Kansas Health Foundation Recognition Grant.

Responsibilities:
♦Facilitate regular g2g Outside events at local parks around the City of Wichita – daytime events and some evenings
♦Organize, supervise, coordinate and evaluate g2g events and contests
♦Update and maintain the g2g Outside blog
♦Manage g2g Outside funds and keep records of all expenses
♦Market and promote g2g Outside at local events and through media sources, including social media as appropriate
♦Recruit and work with volunteers as needed
♦Assure civil rights compliance in all aspects of program
♦Keep records as needed to provide timely personnel, expense and grant reports

Training and Experience Required:
♦HS degree and 2 years of college required
♦Knowledge and experience working with youth
♦Ability to utilize computer technology – navigate the internet, update a blog, use Microsoft Office, social networking sites, etc
♦Ability to work with youth and families of diverse backgrounds
♦Ability to work with volunteers
♦Ability to work within a budget, keep records and file reports
♦Must be self- directed
♦Must have organizational skills
♦Ability to communicate with oral, writing and listening skills
♦Current valid driver’s license, reliable car and insurance
♦Capable of lifting and transporting program equipment and supplies
♦Final hire is subject to a criminal background check

Position is approximately 40 hrs per week for 15 weeks during the summer months with an hourly wage of $13 per hour.  Starting and ending dates are negotiable.
